So yesterday I tried my first hot yoga class at Moksha Yoga LA.  This style of yoga is performed in a room heated to approximately 100 degrees and follows a series of 40 poses. Now I don’t know that I did 40 poses. All I know is this is REALLY hard. Now yoga is not the easiest thing to practice.  Yes, I said practice.  Yoga isn’t something that you can pick up easily. It takes years to develop the discipline and concentration necessary.  Yoga is good for me because my mind it usually all over the place. This is one of the reasons that I don’t sleep well because I just lay in be thinking of all kinds of random crap.

I was always a little intimated by yoga. You don’t see too many fat people in yoga class. I was sure that going to this class would just reinforce my body image issues.  That is one reason why it took me so long to figure out what I was going to wear. Obviously I wasn’t going to show up in a sports bra and some boy shorts.  But the one thing I realized when I got there is its not about anyone else but you.  Everyone was really in their own world.  The yoga studio was a quiet room. That means as soon as you walk in the door there is no talking.  I got there a little early. There were about 4 people already in the room lying in Savasana also known as corpse pose.  This is where you lie on your back arms open at your side, palms up. This is a relaxation pose that prepares your mind for what’s to come. Yeah this is my favorite. Although it is really hard to just lay there, quiet and not moving. But it is a great way to get centered and just focus on you.

I figured out a few years back that I like iyengar yoga better than vinyasa. I don’t like the flow yoga. I like to get into a position and get out of that position before moving to the next one. I’m not all that rhythmic with my breathing so vinyasa is hard for me and I also feel like you don’t stay in the position long enough to calm down and concentrate.  The class I took was called Moksha which focuses more on the posture and the breathing.  There was also no music so I wasn’t distracted.

Before the class even started I was drenched in sweat and totally okay with the fact that I’d just spent $40 for a 10 minute experience.  It’s a little like doing yoga outside in Phoenix on a 100 degree day. Fun right?  Most of the poses were hard for me. I’m not all that flexible and my muscles are really tight. Plus there are layers and layers of fat that get in the way.  But I did the best I could. I stopped and rested when I needed to and drank lots of water.  I didn’t feel all that great when I was done. I mean mentally I felt good but physically I felt sick.  I ate about an 1 1/2 before class but I think next time I’ll make it about 2 hours.  At some points my stomach still felt a little full and I started to get nauseous.  I also got cramps a few times.  Next time I’ll make sure I drink a lot more water during the day before I go.  Thankfully the cramps didn’t last too long and I was able to move past it.

So I paid $40 which is the introductory month special. My plan is to go at least 3x/week. I’ve already made my reservations for tonight, Wednesday and Thursday.  I think I’m going to stick with the night classes. I can’t imagine doing this in the morning or in the middle of the afternoon and having to work afterward. Maybe that will change and my body will adjust.  I think it will be good for me and its another positive step toward my lifestyle change.
